Field calibrations ensure transparency and accuracy in cost allocation

Turun seudun puhdistamo Oy is owned by 14 municipalities and Turku Energia. The company treats the wastewater of its member municipalities and recovers waste heat from the treated water for Turku Energia’s district heating network.

Wastewater from the municipalities is pumped to the Kakolanmäki wastewater treatment plant, which was commissioned in 2009. At the plant, wastewater is treated, and heat is recovered using a separate heat pump facility. Treatment costs are allocated among the owner municipalities based on the volume of wastewater flowing into the plant.

The collaboration between Turun seudun puhdistamo and IndMeas began during the plant’s construction phase. Flow meters were installed in the incoming wastewater channels specifically to allow for on-site calibration.

Calibrations are performed using IndMeas’s unique methods specifically designed for wastewater flows. Because the calibration takes place on-site under normal operating conditions, any measurement errors caused by the installation site are also detected. Additionally, the service is effortless for the customer: meters do not need to be removed from the process or shipped elsewhere for service.

Since 2009, IndMeas has calibrated the wastewater flow measurements at regular intervals. Through these regular field calibrations, Turun seudun puhdistamo has ensured measurement accuracy and, consequently, the fairness of cost allocation.
